This study presents three works by American composer Eric Whitacre (b. 1970), Cloudburst (1996), Lux Aurumque (2001), and Sleep (2002), originally choral compositions transcribed for symphonic winds (2001, 2005, 2003). By examining the assignment of vocal parts to instrument parts, I will clarify Whitacre's compositional practice as it relates to his own instrumental adaptation of three vocal works. Elements considered in the three transcriptions include orchestration choices, melodic reorganization (distributing vocal material to instrument parts), and overall integrity of the wind works compared to their choral settings. Using score examples and the author's constructed tables, this analysis examines Whitacre's transcription process and timbre qualities inherent to each ensemble (choral and winds). The unifying factor in all three transcriptions is their relationship to the poetry (program music) of the original work, and how that relates to Whitacre's instrumental restructuring. Prior scholarly endeavors have focused on either Whitacre's choral or wind works. This research fills an important gap in that none have examined Whitacre's popular transcriptions. Finally, this study will discuss Whitacre's motivation for transcribing his own music and practical suggestions for performance of these works.
The piece was initially composed as a setting for Robert Frost's poem Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, but after a legal to-and-fro with the Frost estate, the poem was no longer allowed to be use. Charles Anthony Silvestri set new text to Whitacre's score. 'This was an enormous task,' says Whitacre. 'I was asking him to not only write a poem that had the exact structure of the Frost, but that would even incorporate key words from "Stopping", like "sleep". Tony wrote an absolutely exquisite poem, finding a completely different (but equally beautiful) message in the music I had already written.'
Asthma and/or allergic rhinitis have been associated with sleep disorders. The aim of this study was to evaluate sleep disorders in Latin-American children (4-10 years) from nine countries, with persistent asthma (A) and/or allergic rhinitis (AR) and in normal controls (C). Parents from 454 C children and 700 A and/or AR children followed up in allergy reference clinics completed the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) which is a retrospective one-week questionnaire composed of 33 questions composed of seven subscales (bedtime resistance, sleep duration, sleep anxiety, night wakings, parasomnias, sleep-disordered breathing and daytime sleepiness). The total scale of CSHQ and the subscales were compared between groups C and A+AR, A (n=285) vs. AR (n=390), and between controlled A (CA, n=103) vs. partially controlled/uncontrolled A (UA, n=182). The comparison between C and A+AR showed no significant differences in age (6.7 years vs. 7.0 years, respectively), mean Body Mass Index and total scale of CSHQ (53.3 vs. 63.2, respectively) and the subscales were significantly higher in the A+AR group. Comparison between groups A and AR, except for sleep anxiety, showed significantly higher values for CSHQ total scale (66.9 vs. 61.0, respectively) and subscales for group A. The UA group showed significantly higher values for total CSHQ scale and subscales in comparison to CA (71.1 vs. 59.4, respectively). Latin-American children with asthma and/or allergic rhinitis showed sleep disorders identified by the CSHQ when compared to normal controls.
